More employers need to realise the benefits of employing local people not just to boost their local economy, but to benefit their business. At Collins we have seen the positive impact of employing people who know the local community and area well and thanks to our recent expansion we have boosted the local economy by taking on staff from the area.
We sell 10,000 tonnes of frozen fish a year from our base in Newton Aycliffe and our cold store depot In Leeds and have doubled the size of our headquarters this year to accommodate staff and a new sales team. We believe that the employment of local people has been a factor in its success.
We employ 17 people in the North-East and 11 in Leeds at our sister company, Wraggs.
The main cash injection into the local economy is from the wages of local staff. Benefits for employers are huge including; lower staff turnover, lower training costs, higher staff morale and better quality service.
Claire Carter, our Operations Director says: “We see the benefit to our business by employing local people. Our customers love to hear a local voice and we benefit from our delivery drivers knowing the area really well.
“We have a wealth of talented people in the North- East. Working with them puts something back into the local community.”
There are often campaigns to shop locally and support local businesses such as the #localeconomy campaign, but businesses also have a responsibility to support the communities they serve through employment.
So going into the New Year our advice from Collins Seafoods would be to employ local and see the benefits in 2014.
